Radiographic examination is used to reveal internal weld flaws by passing high-energy radiation through the weld and recording the image on film or a digital detector. Because radiation is attenuated differently by different densities and by discontinuities, internal issues like porosity, slag inclusions, and cracks show up as contrasts on the radiograph. This lets inspectors see defects that aren’t visible on the surface, making it the most effective method for assessing weld integrity from inside. It isn’t used to measure surface roughness (that’s done with surface-inspection methods), nor is it primarily for measuring dimensions or determining color, since radiographic images are grayscale and focus on internal conditions.
